Pottery journey - fast forward part 2

So I have a lovely studio fully insulated ( for the Scottish weather and winters!) and electricity and water. I also have clay but as yet, no kiln or wheel to start practicing my throwing. However, this won't hinder me creating! My first object to be created in my new space is a house. Maybe because we have just gone through a long protracted move to Scotland that prompted this - but actually I think I just have a thing for houses!

While I was waiting for the studio to be built, I began gathering things ready for pottery production! One thing that arrived around this time was my potter's mark. I based it on my initials J M D - see if you can work that out from the next photo!

I also wanted to have a go at some slab building and so my first attempt was these organic dishes.

At this time (May 2022) I also joined the Scottish Potters Association which I have found to be a friendly open group willing to share in their expertise. It also gives me information about what is happening in the pottery scene in and around Scotland. I'm quickly beginning to learn that Scotland is much bigger than I imagined but am eager to explore and have discovered that there is vibrant pottery community spanning this beautiful country.)

I follow lots of great potters on instagram and saw that Florian Gadsby produced a picture of tools that he had collected. over the years. I thought I would produce a picture of tools that I have used in these early stages of my pottery journey. It might be interesting to create another picture of my current 'go to' tools as my practice develops!

So while I await the big guns (kiln and wheel), I'm thinking about the sorts of resources I am going to need. So I start by buying a sample pack of decorative slips and cold apply wax ( to stop pot bottoms from sticking to kiln shelves). I'm sure I will make some mistakes along the way but we all have to start somewhere right? What I've found so far is that the more resources I have, the more I think I would like to have!!

This post was meant to be about the kiln and wheel arriving but quite a lot happened between having the studio ready and the kiln and wheel installation. So that will have to wait until next time!
